Lock and load ladies, it’s that time of year again. Utility, it seems has not worn out its usefulness. A barrage of military-inspired silhouettes paraded down the runways as designers continue to use the world landscape as inspiration. The utilitarian aesthetic has been a longtime favorite, however, unlike the last go-a-around, this season’s utilitarian creations are less about camoflauge and more polished and feminine approach. Masculine military jackets were cleverly paired with softer, luxe separates, like velvet skirts and streamlined trousers.
The military look was the muse on the Fall 2012 runways where designers like Jason Wu, Victoria Beckham and Marc by Marc Jacobs showed military accents in their collections. But unlike past revivals, the new take on utility is more polished and lady-like; think sophisticated statement jackets adorned with decorative epaulets paired with softer feminine pieces.
The trend is major-inspired fall 2013 collection. But it was designer Prabal Gurung powerful Fall ’13 collection that seemed to seamlessly exemplified the new utilitarian look. His collection was fit for modern warrior women with impeccably-tailored military-inspired outerwear, chic dress-up-or-down separates, silk cocktail dresses with strategically sexy cutouts and slits, and effortlessly-cool gowns for a don’t-mess-with-me sense of female empowerment.
It is an academy look that is sophisticated and modern,” says Tommy Hilfiger, “a touch rebellious but buttoned up, a personalized take on military precision.
Utility fever, it seems, has also reached around the globe- from Paris to Penang- celebrities and stylist are embracing one of the season’s strongest trends. “The military look appeals to many female celebrities because it is versatile”, says South Korean stylist Kim Seong-il.” Kate Maresova, Alexandra Tikerpuu and Solveig Mork sport military chic in the October issue of Vogue Mexico and Mi Xing commands our attention in the September issue of Vogue China.
So this season, forward march to army gear and declare olive green your favorite color!
How to pull off the military look with ease:
1
TONE IT DOWN
Are you fatigued of fatigues? Never fear: There are various ways to wear this trend without feeling over powered. Try toning down the full-on army vibe by pairing sexy shorts with a structured military jacket and a cap. This is a great way to blend masculinity and femininity into one look.
2
SOFTEN IT UP
Soften the look by adding metallic, bronze and antique jewelry accessories. Remember the key to this trend is all about incorporating some of the key elements into your own personal style for an individual edge.
3
STRUCTURE
Choose pieces with detailing and structure that create a slimming silhouette with the use of wide lapels and figure-flattering darting. A fitted blazer or structured trench coat will enhance your feminine figure. It can be beautifully highlighted with a bright floral scarf or burgundy silk or white lacy blouse. The aim is to look slightly tough, very chic.
